What you'll learn

English Typing Speed:

An English typing speed course is crucial for computer work as it boosts productivity, saves significant time, improves accuracy, enhances focus by building muscle memory (touch typing), and gives a competitive edge in the job market by demonstrating discipline and efficiency, essential for nearly all digital tasks from emailing to coding. Mastering fast and accurate typing streamlines workflows, reduces errors, and allows you to complete computer-based tasks more quickly and comfortably.

Course Syllabus

Course Content:

Module 1: Ergonomics & Physical Setup

  • The 90-90-90 Rule: Positioning elbows, hips, and knees at 90-degree angles.
  • Wrist Health: Learning to keep wrists "floating" or straight, rather than resting heavily on a desk or wrist pad, to prevent Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).
  • Eye Level: Adjusting monitor height to reduce neck strain.
  • Keyboard Types: Understanding the difference between Membrane, Mechanical, and Ergonomic (split) keyboards.

Module 2: The Architecture of the Keyboard

  • The Home Row (The Anchor): Master the $F$ and $J$ bumps (tactile markers).
  • The Top Row & Bottom Row: Learning the vertical reach.
  • The Function Keys ($F1–F12$): When and how to use them.
  • Modifier Keys: Deep dive into Shift, Alt, Ctrl, and Command.
  • The Space Bar: Using the thumb of your non-dominant hand vs. dominant hand.

Module 3: Muscle Memory Mechanics

  • Finger Zoning: Assigning each of the 10 fingers to a specific "territory" on the board.
  • The "Return to Home" Habit: Training the brain to return fingers to the home row after every single keystroke.
  • Blindfold Drills: Typing simple sentences without looking at the screen or keyboard to build neural pathways.
  • Eliminating "Hunt and Peck": Breaking the habit of using only two fingers.

Module 4: English Language Patterns (Linguistics)

  • Digraphs & Trigraphs: Practicing common letter pairs like TH, ER, ON, AN, RE.
  • Common Affixes: Speed drills for prefixes (un-, pre-, non-) and suffixes (-ing, -tion, -ness, -ment).
  • The Top 300: Intense drills on the 300 most common English words which make up roughly 65% of all written material.

Module 5: Numbers, Symbols, and Data Entry

  • The Number Row: Transitioning from the Home Row to the top number line without losing placement.
  • Symbol Mastery: Quick access to brackets [], braces {}, and math symbols * / + -.
  • The Numpad (10-Key): For accounting and data entry roles, learning the right-hand calculator layout.

Module 6: Accuracy vs. Velocity

  • The Penalty of Error: Calculating how much time is lost to the Backspace key (1 error usually costs the time of 3 correct characters).
  • Steady Rhythm: Using a metronome (or rhythmic typing) to ensure the gap between every keystroke is identical.
  • Net WPM vs. Gross WPM: * Gross WPM: Total speed.
  • Net WPM: Speed minus errors. (This is the only metric employers care about).
